I feel really dumb for asking this but i was wondering how many batteries go into the factory remote keyless entry for a 96 XJ

I'm waiting for mine to come in the mail still.
Bought one on eBay for like 20 dollars.

There was one in it. Bought a new battery and tried it with no luck. I put the other one in it and it closed fine so I have no idea. Still didnt work though

try getting another new battery. if it does take two, it should work (the remote at least) with two new ones. the red light should flash when the buttons are pressed.

if two doesnt work, make sure the batteries you're putting in are the correct size.

my impression from reading elsewhere is that there is one battery, not two. make sure you have the right size and that the one you currently have isnt too small.

my 96 cherokee has 2 in it, not sure why, but it does work!
