Thought it was the CPS so I replaced that, still not running right.
Then checked the battery and it was bad: only holding 10 volts. Replaced that and alternator for good measure.
After putting all back together, started doing same thing.
Figured I'd check the tranny fluid, not even touching the stick and really burnt. So I replaced the tranny filter and refilled the fluid.
Now the truck starts, idles, runs fine. Shifts through all gears unless you give it too much gas or stomp it to the floor. It just goes into a "coast mode" or something, no tranny, no RPMs, just a coast feeling until you let off the gas, then it catches and drives on.
Does not seem to slip in any gear.
What is happening? What have I done?

Kind of sounds like your trans is having a problem knowing where your throttle is at.
00exjay and cruiser54 get out of my post please! You guys aren't helping me.
Old trans fluid was really black...
Thing is, it shifts through all the gears and will kickdown at times.
No slipping.
When it does klickdown, sometimes the tranny whines a little like a turbine winding up.
I did try the tranny cable fix, but i did it a different way, ill check it again when i get home.

So I tried the cable adjustment, no dice. Tranny still disengaging when you give it a lot of gas. Weird thing is that the engine does not rev, the tranny and the engine just "coast".
The filter in the tranny was an exact replacement.
It was doing this before the filter swap.
I have bought another TCU off ebay and should arrive by Friday. I also plan on going through all the electrical connections with cleaner and dielectric grease.
I am stumped and frustrated, this truck has been great since I got it in like 1999. It does have 180,000 miles now though.
Saw the article about the NSS. Would that cause weird shifting issues like kickdown not holding?

i dont think the nss would cause the problem youre describing. i could be wrong.
ever think about the solenoids. i dont know much about them and all but im sure someone does around here. but if i recall they can get fouled and start odd symptoms with the transmission.

So the cherokee is still cutting out around 2000 RPM while driving. I drove about 300 miles last week on a trip and could never press hard on the accelerator or the truck would just start to coast like no fuel/spark. Almost like rev limit. No engine rev, tranny slip or anything. The truck idles fine, revs in park.
The truck will barely hold 60 MPH cause you can't hold the pedal too far down.
Anyone have any other input? I have not checked the solenoids in the tranny...woudl a lock up solenoid cause this?
I do have fuel pump and filter to put in. Gonna get a fuel pressure regulator too.

May want to start from scratch with the basics i.e. maintanence items, diagnostics (compression test, fuel pressure, etc.). Attempt to get the engine functioning correctly first. Just throwing random parts at it gets expensive and rarely solves the problem. May just be less expensive for you to take it somewhere if you don't have the tools and/or knowledge.
OK, thought you guys might be interested in an update. I put a NAPA TPS sensor on the cherokee finally and drove it around for a few weeks. Went out to drive it one day and it drives normal again, has been for two weeks.
So I'm not sure what fixed it. The TPS was throwing codes. I did put a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in the tranny when I did the service.
Maybe I needed a quality TPS from NAPA? Maybe the tranny was gunked up from running it low, I dunno, it runs fine now.

I'll third that. When I bought mine, the transmission fluid was completely black, looked like motor oil. New filter and gasket + 5 drain/re-fills later it's very clean and red. Drops into gear without a "clunk" and shifts very smooth. Also did the 5 minute throttle adjustment, really helped shifting too.
