Ran my tranny fluid really low....now, no WOT
My 1996 Cherokee Sport was getting hard to start and until it warmed up, would not stay running.
Thought it was the CPS so I replaced that, still not running right.
Then checked the battery and it was bad: only holding 10 volts. Replaced that and alternator for good measure.
After putting all back together, started doing same thing.
Figured I'd check the tranny fluid, not even touching the stick and really burnt. So I replaced the tranny filter and refilled the fluid.
Now the truck starts, idles, runs fine. Shifts through all gears unless you give it too much gas or stomp it to the floor. It just goes into a "coast mode" or something, no tranny, no RPMs, just a coast feeling until you let off the gas, then it catches and drives on.
Does not seem to slip in any gear.
What is happening? What have I done?

So if the tranny is mechanically OK, which it appears to be, what electrical parts do I start with? I bought a used tcm off eBay and will try that when it gets here.
Anyone have any suggestions what else could cause the downshift then engine/tranny coast?

sounds like not transmission problem, I think.
Any codes?
worn out transmission would slip.
About burnt fluid:
if pump didn't have enough ATF, pistons wouldn't apply enough pressure to hold clutch disks together (same about bands), clutches would slip, burning fluid.
If clutch disks didn't wear out, you still have a chance.
If you want to check transmission, most transmissions have plugs to check fluid pressure, you need to have oil pressure gauge and manual.
98 Durango, for example has about 5-6 pressure control holes, so after checking pressure, you pretty much know problem.
Most transmissions only need rebuild kit (about $80), rebuilt converter is about $100.

Relax Cruiser, maybe you need to apply for moderator's job?

I suggested you to apply for a moderators job, then noticed you are already a moderator.
You can always ban me, do you have a reason? Hope not.

Check the output voltage from your TPS (key on, engine off) while you slowly rotate the throttle from closed to wide open. You should see a smooth increase in voltage with no skips or dropouts, with output voltage rising to just under 5V at full throttle.

That's not quite the case here. Nobody is "getting back" at anyone. One person is getting in the way, wasting others' time, arguing, being rude, and inhibiting what this forum is supposed to do, help people. He is being made aware of this. That's all.
