It's the same way on mine. Attaches to the top of t-case, routes over the top of the tranny, and bolts I think between the tranny and the engine. Mine just hangs though, like in your picture. The guy before is probably right, a breather tube, really shouldn't have that much fluid for it to be an overflow. That, and the EPA probably wouldn't be too happy about overflowing transmission fluid. I suppose it could be vacuum, but there's nothing in that range that would connect it to the vacuum system.
Just curious and maybe I read this earlier, are you having any issues with 4 wheel drive? I'm betting you're running an ax15 tranny with a 231 case

but yet i am having trouble with my 4wd. i fixed the linkage to changes if form 2 to 4wd. but i dont think the front isnt locking in like is should.
was going to over rind it but have not clue where to start.

have someone watch your front drive shaft to besure its spinning, with the rears on ice or the whole thing on jack stands, wouldn't jack just the rears. if it is, theres a disconnect on the right side of the front axle that usually goes bad, the got rid of it in '91. its vacuum actuated so check for vacuum there when in 4wd. if there is you can replace it, or get a cable actuated one that you manually pull yourself, or i think you can scrap the 2 piece shaft with a one piece from a '91 & up. theres probally a write up on here on how to & what you'll need. let us know what you find.

its just the vent for the tranny... 100% positive.. but i dont know were it plugs into top of the tranny.. guess ill have to take a mirror and look...but for the op its just the vent... and should be bolted to the top left bolt of transmission to engine....
