Default Radio died

Hey guys, was on my way to work this morning when the radio just went to fuzz. Tried every FM station and got nothing, but was able to pick up one AM station with decent clarity. Pulled over and turned off the Jeep and turned it back on to get a quick blast off an FM station and then it was right back to the fuzz. Does this sound like a head unit problem or possibly the antenna? This is in a 1998 sport with no aftermarket audio anything. Thanks for the quick replies.

Hard to say conclusively. Your stereo is 16 years old and might be telling you it wants to be put to rest. It may be the wiring to the antenna. and/or.

You might enjoy having a new stereo put in because it will sound better and be more functional. For the antenna, the junkyard will have tons of them for cheap...or you might just get a new one...or fix the wiring if the antenna is fine.

Yeah I am sure it would sound better, but I just like the clean look of the stock one. I am not experienced with car audio stuff, but is there a way I can test any part of the system to determine the definite problem?

Test resistance between the antenna connector plug from the back of the stereo to the antenna itself with a multimeter/ohmmeter.

If you can't fix the problem there are a lot of good factory radios with all the options on eBay to choose from. I had a new aftermarket unit in mine when I bought it, I pulled it out and bought a factory Alpine 100w AM/FM/CD/Cassette for $50.

I have the OEM CD player out of my 2000 if you're interested in it.

I'll hopefully have time to test the antenna today or tomorrow and figure out if that's the problem or the radio. Thanks for the reminder about ebay. I don't know why but I always forget about ebay lol.

If it ends up being the radio I will let you know and we can figure that out.
