1995 Cherokee Sport, 2 wd, auto transmission. Problem is when ignition is on after starting my Jeep, the radio/ A/C blower/ cigarette plug are all o/a, however if I switch the ignition to accessory position everything works. So I can listen to the radio, unless I want to drive somewhere.

x2 on the ign switch. two ways to fix it .... the jeep way (see what i did jeep instead of cheap) is to be sure to manually turn the key all the way back to the run position after cranking... proper way is to replace the switch/lock

I figured it was the ignition, however have been stymied removing the cowl surrounding the steering column. I removed the star screw from the underside, but can't figure out what fastener holds the two corners on either side of the cowl cover. Local Jeep dealer has the part ($140.95) + labor at $270.00. Seems a bit costly.
Any suggestions on replacing ignition appreciated.

Thank you for the suggestions. I replaced the ignition switch, (at AutoZone), so saved $400 that the local Jeep dealer wanted to charge. It appears that the ignition was OK as unfortunately the problem persists and would appear to be associated with the slide mechanism on the side of the steering column, which is activated by the key , moving towards the forward portion of the steering column when ignition is in the accessory position, and back towards the ignition when in start or run. Any further suggestions appreciated.

Before I'm willing to head off to the dealer, it would be nice to find the forum referance that discusses the accessory/run lever that is controlled by the ignition key. I recall seeing this mentioned, but haven't been able to locate it in "search".
Found it, now to figure out how to post the image?

After replacing the LS711 ignition starter switch, and several long chats with the technical folks at Wells Vehical Electronics, while still unable to locate the problem, I opted to go with a "quick fix". I couldn't locate any defective ground, burned out plug or wiring harness problem, so simply put in a fused bypass switch spliced into the service side of the ignition wiring. This allows me to supply 12 vdc to what should be a hot 12 volt wire, which due to the as yet undiscovered electrical problem was a dead line. Presto, everything now works off a new switch on the dash instead of through the ignition harness. But, it works!!
