unless you're licensed for amateur radio, CB
if licensed, 6m and up if you'll be in an area with repeaters...smaller whip
if you want range where you're stuck and no cell service and you're licensed......i be thinking 10-20m daytime and 40m night (usable whip range) 80m you're getting a little low for a usable/mountable antenna
i use an 857d w/atas 120...covers me 40m thru 70cm
and can listen to the guides on 11m

I have them all installed in both my Jeeps, the XJ has a Cobra CB, Yaesu FT-8900 Quad band 10/6/2/440m FM and an HF 6-160m. There are times when I can only get out with for emergencies is my HF rig. In this area cell phones are worthless 90% of the time on the trails. Here are 2 of them, I'm good on QRZ if you care to look.

If I can be of any help to you on a mobile install in your XJ I would be happy to do so. I found that it did present a few challenges not found on other installs due to the off road use. On mine it was lots of trees, brush, rock overhang's and a much more HD mount to hold the antenna.
As with any comm. equipment installed in a off road Jeep there are some things that need to be addressed, no biggies but have to be done. I followed some of the same things used in a Military Hum-V, modified.
I use my XJ as a portable station for my QRP HF/6m station an Elecraft KX3 5w setup on mountain tops. I'm using a 31' fiberglass push-up pole (wire vertical with 3 31' radials) attached to a receiver hitch.
My XJ is the only thing that will make it even close to the top of several of these places. Also you would be surprised how far you can work on FM simplex and the distance you can hit repeaters from.
All in all Jeeps and radio go together hobby wise and I belong to the Sherriff's Dept. Mobile Search & Rescue unit in my area.

My question was: Supposing you're in the boonies and the truck dies, what would be the most likely to succeed radio protocol? CW is obvious answer, but local wheelers who understand code likely to be pretty sparce.. But I guess you could just send SOS and hope for the best...

Thanks for the offer, I think I can work up an install of the equipment, but I'll be back to you if I have any questions.
I'm just trying to find out what is the most popular radio protocol amongst offroaders, so's I can yell for help is stuck down in a canyon, which we have a lot of hereabouts.
(Sierra foothills, eastern CA). Most any FM works on the ridges, vanishes down by the creek...

I wanted to know whether most use Citizens Band, 2-meter (FM) radio, or some other amateur radio protocol to talk when lost in the woods.

I think your best bet is probably CB. I just got a Uniden 510XL CB and a 4 foot FireStik for my rig. I'm not sure the range will be the best, maybe 2-4 miles depending on conditions and what not, but I'm still a CB newbie. FireStik should be arriving today and I can start making my mount.
