i really would like to find out what is this rear axle. I find it noisy at highway speed and need to know what it is to find a solution / parts. Looking on the web, I don’t find a similar one.

shape and position (very low) of the plug (little oil in there..)

It has a metal tag, but unreadable.

I also show what is written below the axle. Seems to say 88 ? Or is it something else ?

it is installed on my XJ Wagoneer Limited supposed to be from 87.

Looks like a D44.

Check out this page. There are numbers stamped into the right side axle tube.

It is an XJ wagoneer from 87
but the differential housing seems to say 88

Just spent 30 min on the docs. None looks like EXACTLY my rear differential.

What makes you think it is a 44 [and how to know the ratio for sure)

From 87 to 91, according to Wikipedia, XJs with a tow package could come with a Dana 44 axle
