Here lately, I have noticed that the AW4 on my 91 XJ wants to hard shift just a bit. It is mainly during the first drive, like when I leave the house for college. After the gears shift a couple of times, no more issues. However, the gear that concerns me most is my OD. On the first 2-3 shifts into OD, she more or less jerks into.. no slip, just jerks. After those few times, she seems ok. I was thinking of tossing some Lucas Transmission Stabilizer into the ol AW4, thinking that maybe 20 years of service and 200xxx miles have just left some valves sticky. What do you guys think?

Also, do I need to drain tranny oil to add this stuff? Forgive my ignorance. I just didn't know if this stuff soaks into gaskets and valves or if it flows around with oil all the time. And I add it through the dipstick right?

Noone? In all honesty, it never fails to amuse me how quickly my questions get moved to the back of the line lol. All you can do is laugh.

Transmissions will be a little 'firmer' on shift when they are cold, once they are up to temp though they should smooth out. I dunno about adding the Lucas, but their other stuff works great so this probably will too. When was the last time the transmission fluid was changed and the filter cleaned?

Not sure exactly, but by the looks of it, recently. The fluid is actually fairly clear, and doesn't smell burnt or anything.

You can't tell a transmission's service history by looking at the fluid. If you don't know the Jeep's history, you should change all your fluids including the transmission.

Drain and fill that trans. Then drive it for a few hundred miles and do it again. NEVER put some miracle crap in it. The post Fantic put in yesterday is a tutorial on trans fluid. A must read.
