Quick oil question

Default Quick oil question

Wall mart hasn't been stocking the T5 10-30 that I usually use. They do have T6 5-40. When I added half a quart of mystery oil at one point it seemed to make my oil too thin and the lifters were noisy. Not sure if the 5 would be too thin or maybe not a problem. One because it's getting colder out and two because the 5 is only at 32 degrees and once warmed it would be a 40. Whereas the mystery oil would have dropped the viscosity at both temps.

Well I just answered my own question. NAPA has T4 10-30 on sale this month for $15 and change per gallon. They can get me T5 but it's $25 per gallon there.

T6 5-40 should do fine, and probably better than the other ones.

Why do you feel you need MM with your oil every time? I'm not even sure if MM recommends it or not. I've been using T6 for at least 3yrs now and when I recently replaced my valve cover gasket it couldn't have been any cleaner in there. Also the valve train is quiet but it always has been.

I should add that I'm not a big fan of additives but I swear by MM. Use it twice a year in my fuel system.

I only added it once. Figured at 215,000 miles it couldn't hurt. But like I said. I only added half a quart with the 10-30 and it made my lifters noisy. I changed it out with some 10-40 conventional and things quieted back down. But last oil change I used Quaker state conventional because the Rotella wasn't available. Trying to get back to using Rotella.

Also at one point my wife had the oil changed at a shop in town because I didn't have time to do it and they said they used 5-30 and that also caused a slight lifter noise as well. Maybe it's just my particular vehicles but seems as though a 5 is too thin. So I've been sticking with 10-30.

Also when the 5-30 was put in my wife's and when I used MMO both were in the summer with higher temps. I haven't bothered to try lighter weight in the winter yet

I use Delo 10w30 and am very happy with it. I buy mine at Wal-Mart, might be an alternative for you.

You won't have any problems running 5w40, I run 15w40 all year round with temps ranging from 0-100* with no problems.

Yep... Me too. You and I can have peace of mind that it hurts absolutely nothing but adds much more lubrication and cushion to those bearings. This light weight oil trend is deceptive and out of control. I saw 0w30 for the first time the other day thinking "are they nuts? 0 weight?", I don't want my bottom number under 15 weight... ever...in anything.

i ran 0-40 in a lsx motor 15 years ago. lots of abuse, no issues. bugout, do you understand what the numbers in oil represent? in cold climates a 15w40 oil will damage an engine far more than a 0w40 oil will.

I knew someone would ask this... I absolutely understand...and can tell you that this "Miracle Snake Oil" that is supposed to defy all physics is exactly that... Snake Oil. I lived through it going from straight weight to multigrade. And I loved the change as it was when it happened. But it has now gone beyond any and all common sense and physics just to sell a snake oil. It is indeed a good thing... But it has it's limits and we are now surpassing those limits in high favor of those who make money from automobile repair. And I am one of those who does...

You have no idea how many big rig rear differentials I had to replace because they put lower weight multigrade oil in a differential and then sent it south to Az just one trip in the summer. This is the same thing that happens with all multigrade oils. Unless you live in Alaska or Canada where it is staring at minus 0 conditions, You are screwing up by putting anything less than 10 weight oil in it.

Trust me on this. I used to do services on equipment up there that were never shutoff... ever. We had to do services while it was running maintaining "operating temp". And we still never degraded oil weight because those bearings need that cushion. Been there... The only reason for lighter oil in cold conditions is to prevent a possible breakage of an oil pump drive, or to make sure oil is slinging or squirting onto the bottom of the pistons to help cool them. Cooling pistons is not a problem in very cold weather. In fact in diesels the air needs to be heated on the way in at a certain lower temp.

Ya. I've always pretty much ran 10-30 or 10-40 in everything I have owned from mowers to big blocks. The temps here do drop below zero a fair amount of nights in winter and sometimes the temp doesn't get out of the teens for a week or more at a time.

I guess the issue with my Jeeps getting noisy with thinner oil isn't very common. And actually they also do it if I wait a little too long between oil changes. Once the oil starts losing its viscosity.

Think I'll just switch back to the T4 10-30. Was running it at first but then when I found out T5 was cheap at WalMart I switched to that. Not going to do the 5w. Cool if you all have no issues with it but just going to stick with what has always worked. Maybe even switch to 10-40 in the summertime.

Absolutely... 20-22 inch wheels are a fad and trend too. Do they belong on an off road rig? Absolutely not... just asking for trouble.

I have pens 10/30 on a 300000, on a 1998 grand she still runs great. xmother and law inherited it she put 70.00000 on it her self.my 2001 cherokee i put full synthetic 10/30 pen/mobil ran good 1600000 no complants there. my daughter baught her 2001 cherokee with 12500000.synthetic oil radiator,water pump thermostate and housing,runs real good drives out of state all the time.S ome the those 4.0 are just very good motors.

vehicles with wheels that big are rarely used off-road. I have some 20s on my truck that a customer sold me for super cheap and I said eh why not. I have my jeep and atvs to go around and play with. My truck is just my tow and work vehicle.
