Default Quick oil leak question

hey guys im pretty sure i know where the oil leak is coming from but i just want to confirm. So the entire transmission is covered with oil and i could see and smell where oil drops onto the exhaust cross pipe. i really cant pin point a spot where the oil leaks from though, everything on the engine seems dry and clean so im guessing its the rear main seal. I guess my question is could the rear main seal leak and not drip down the oil pan and just jump over to the trans? ill snap some pics in the morning and its 1997 4.0 4wd auto trans. any input would help.
Thanks!

Valve cover gasket could also do what you're describing

I had oil all over the trans as well as starter. It is coming from my oil filter adaptor. A very common problem.

And clean everything top to bottom with gunk or purple power cleaner at a car wash.
Then look to see where it is coming from.
I am in the process of doing this now, take it from me it has to be cleaned first.
You'll know what you need to do to fix.
So far I've replaced the valve cover gasket & oil filter adapter. Both were leaking.
I'm monitoring now to determine if I need a oil pan gasket & rear main seal.

Thanks for the responses guys! I went ahead and checked those points of interest and everything seems dry. Except for the area around the oil filter and distributor but it looks more like residue from a messy oil change. And I couldn't find a trail going to the rear of the engine towards the rear main seal. I cleaned most of it and gonna keep and eye on it but I'm pretty sure it's the rear main. Will keep you guys updated!
