if you've recently replaced the cps, or messed around with anything, or by simple age....it's the best assumption that the wires for the CPS are resting on the exhaust manifold, causing intermittent break in the wire (melted copper does not conduct within spec)

ok so I unplugged the cps, plugged it back in, got a jump, started up. Idled fine, probably would have idled til it ran out of gas. Made it about 100 yards and it died again. So I just left it in a parking lot. It's about an hour and a half from home so I'll be back in the next two days to try to figure it out.. Not sure what it could be at all.

I have had my wiring to my fuel pump corrode causing the pump to die on me. It would work incrementally until finally dying all the way. May want to check it.

Oops forgot to check for spark.

I did glance at the wiring for the fuel pump. Where was yours corroded?

did you skip reading my statement about the CPS laying on the exhaust manifold? I guarantee you that there is an issue with the CPS, and that is likely it.

if it's laying on the EXHAUST manifold, that is not normal. the heat melts the copper wires and will short out the CPS. that's a fact.

Well I'll have to give it a good look over when I head back up there. It's an hour and a half away from home. I honestly don't know if I'll even have a chance to work on it myself because of work and it being so far away. May end up chugging it to a shop.

I thank you all for your help and I'll update this when I know a little more

My wiring corroded right at the connection to the fuel pump.

Good to know that you got her going again. I figured that was your problem. Because my 98 XJ did the exact some thing as yours did

yeah since it was so far away and i had already been without it for too long I towed it to the mechanic I take her too when I need a job done right quick and cheap. with my work schedule and garage being a mess I had no time to do it myself.
