Default Question for anyone who has redone floorpan

I am in the process of doing my floor pans.

I have a couple of questions.

First question is, on the passenger side, was is this chunk of metal that is in between the frame rails in the pic. It is riveted to the floor pan. I took it out. What was it for and can I just toss it instead of putting back with the new pan / patch?

Second question is....does everyone remove the rubber / foam that is at the toe boards and under the dashboard? Any harm with removing it?

The foam is for insulation, most folks cut it away as needed.

No idea, possibly part of the manufacturing process...I don't see what it would do since you are cutting and patching that area anyway.

I found the same thing tucked into my frame rails when I did my floor... 2001 XJ. Nearest I could tell, it's some kind of damper/sound absorber/etc. It's definitely not structural, so you're not going to hurt anything by taking it out.

Not sure what that is. I'm redoing my pans now. Mine didn't have peice between frame rails. Lol, mines a much bigger project.

I know, in 95, jeep add more structural support in the XJs for more protection and strength in collision, maybe that's part of it.

And my jeep is a 93, so that would explain why I don't have it.

What did you use to separate the rear pan from the frame rails? That is my next project on Mr Rusty.

A large flat head and a hammer. I just cut the shape I need first with an angle grinder, and them slowly peeled up the pan while hitting each spot weld with a hammer and flathead till it popped loose. Air hammer would probably work better if you have one. It took me about an hour.

Spot weld cutter makes easy work of it as well.

Anywho. I have one more question. If I am needing to spot weld the pan to the frame. How do I coat the frame against rust but yet still be able to weld to it???

Weld-through primer, and then maybe one of the products Eastwood sells with the long flexible spray tip to get into the frame rail holes and coat the underside/joints of the new floor pan
