Default question about rear main seal stop leak

ok so i have a little leak coming from my rear main seal and my grandpa is having a S*^& fit about the little oil spots on the drive way. So today im goign to do an oil change and put in 5 quarts of oil and one quart of the bar rear main seal stop leak. im not looking for the stop leak to repair anything im just wanting it to slow down the leak till i get the time to do the actual repair. good or bad idea? i got the stop leak for free so its not costing me anything but the oil and filter.

IMO, bad idea. I dont like the though of that stuff floating around through the oil system. An even cheaper fix is to park over a drip pan or park in the street.

All the stop leak will do is swell the seal, to stop the leak. HTH

A friend of mine used some in his 6 cylinder Lexus and it seem to have stopped the leak. I don't condone this stuff just an experience I've seen.

Work; this is my only experience with it... I haven't gotten under his car to see where its leaking from and if its stopped 100% but I haven't seen any new stains on my driveway. He's my roommate.

The bars rear main seal stop leak will not harm your engine. Its not any thicker that normal oil, it just contains extra conditioners that are supposed to make the seal swell up. I did try this and it did not work though. There are two other areas that will look like a rear main leak also, so check those first because that could be an easier fix. Check the Valve cover around the back and check the oil filter adapter. Look under the jeep and flash a light at the oil filter. You may see some oil coating the filter and on the adapter. Both are quick easy fixes and could fix your issue. Otherwise when you change the oil make sure you use conventional not synthetic. From what I understand Synthetic seeps easier. The leak may not stop but that could help slow it down, and it wont hurt to throw the leak stop in with the oil.
