Morning all,
I have a question this time about axles and steering joints.
I have a 1998 XJ 2.5 Diesel – a Right Hand Drive UK model, about 87000 miles and manual gearbox. It has part time 4wd. In the last couple of days two things have started to happen at the same time which I think are coincidental but I’ll mention them in case those with greater experience than me know better! I think that the running gear under the car is the same as petrol wagons.
The first one which is fairly minor is that on starting and stopping the motor, there is a distinct muffled clonk – not a metallic one - which wasn’t there before. I’m sure its just the motor moving around and banging on the chassis or exhaust, but it is a new sound! I haven’t had the chance to look under the car yet.
The second thing (and sounds more serious to me) is that on turning to the left there is a new distinct clicking sound, which sounds to me very much like worn CV joints on a front wheel drive car. Obviously I know that this is normally RWD! I think this is coming from the right hand side of the car (looking forward).
Would that be a common sound? Wheel bearing maybe, or UJ in the hub? There is no wobble or vibration and the wheel nuts are tight.
Grateful for your thoughts…I suspect its fairly common…these things do make an orchestra of sounds!
Best,
Jim

Absolutely common..
For the first problem it could just be worn out motor mounts or trans mount.
Second problem sounds like youve got it nailed with the u-joint.
