Why? The 4.0L is far superior engine.

You could search for a bellhousing adapter so you can stick with the auto trans in your Jeep. It's a lot more work than people think to convert an auto to a manual. It's not as easy as just slappin a trans in. Need to cut holes and what not for the shifter, fab brackets for the pedal assembly, run the clutch cable or hydraulic lines, etc. So if you can find a bellhousing adapter, it shouldn't be impossible.

Well considering the AMC 258 is an older engine, it probably has a mechanical fuel pump and your Jeep has an electronic fuel pump. Just google a 258 to 4.0 swap and it should give you some insight. You're just doing the reverse swap, so it shouldn't be impossible.

I put an AMC 360 in mine and with a mechanicle fuel pump all you have to do is cut the wires to the fuel pump to avoid floding the engine, big pressure difference from fuel injected to carb.

will the valve cover from the 258 work on my 4.0? because they make cool covers for the 4.2 and not so many for the 4.0

y not just stick with fuel injection? just swap everything over to the 4.2 258.

just looked them up the fuel injection will swap over distributor also everything else is just sensors. the trans looks to mount the same. as far as i know the 4.2 and 4.0 are essentially the same block just different strokes

Swap in your 4.2 and keep all the fuel injection stuff...
