Default Putting a 2004 4.0 into 98 Classic

I've seen different posts about engine swaps, but not this particular swap.
Taking a 2004 4.0 out of a grand Cherokee & putting it into my 98 Cherokee Classic.
Anyone know what difficulties I might run into when I drop it in? Doing it Thursday, so any help would be appreciated!

I THINK I read somewhere that you could only use one from the '90s but don't quote me on that...... I've been wrong before.

The 04 doesnt have a distributor and the exhaust ports in the head are smaller. Im not sure if a distributor can be installed in the newer block or not. Exhaust port size in the head shouldnt be too much of an issue. A 91 to 99.5 block would have been much more ideal.

I believe the motor mounts are different, as well as some accessory mounting bosses. Check and see if BrownDog makes an adapter.

Thanks for the responses. So, look for an adapter, figure out a work around for the exhaust port heads- maybe use the 98 head? Not sure if it will fit.
Not sure what to do about the distributor problem tho.

the motor mounts are different, as stated the heads are different, no distributor dont believe one will mount up, flexplate is probably different because the grand uses a different transmission and torque converter, the injectors are different flow, wiring harness has different plugs, some of the sensors will probably have different connectors.

as stated find a 91 through 99 4.0 out of an xj. it will drop right in.

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

Ok, I took your advice & got a 95 rebuilt 4.0.

Thanks again for the great feedback!

Looks like the transmission isn't going to match up.

You might want to take a closer look, I can't imagine any reason the tranny wouldn't bolt right up.
