Yeah but I dont think the effect would be real noticable. I cant imagine it would drop the internal engine temp 20*.. maybe 5* or so.. I dont have proof to back any of this up either way.
that is what I was thinking too. IMO I think that it is a good looking mod if done right and if it lowers the temp a little it is also somewhat benificial so it isn't just an asthetic type of deal.

Lowering the under hood temp is still good. There are alot of rubber and plastic parts under there.
Recently I had a heater core selector valve go bad and start leaking. There was a plastic T fitting between the valve and the firewall that is used to flush the system. The outside of it had actually melted that I couldnt read what it said on the cap. It looked like it was covered in dry tar or something. It was quite brittle. I have no idea how long the T had been in there but it shows how much heat is trapped.

yeah I have had some of my plastic parts melt to. I was just now reading some people claim to have a 10-15 degree drop in temp with the lebaron vents particularyly since the drivers side vent is located directly above the intake and exhust manifolds. I am thinking that this would also be a benifit for cold air intake. Any thoughts?

By 10-15* are they talking underhood temp or internal engine temp?

that is pretty good since I was in about three foot of snow this last weekend and my temp was running about 200-210 with the heater on it runs the same temp when it is hot out to.
x2 on that but I am too cheap to buy a safari snorkle and I think that homemade snorkles look awful. And I think that with our little 4.0's cold air intakes are a waste of money IMO. I would rather spend the money on headers and a good exhust system.

I think a hood scoop directly over the air filter box would have more benefit than a "cold air intake" mounted in the engine compartment.
Maybe one like the old datsun/nissans had.. Though driving in rain maybe out of the question with a scoop pouring water directly into your air filter, so it really wouldnt be logical for a DD/trail type rig.

me to and I belive that it would also improve what you would get out of an intake since I have always wonderd why they are called "cold air intakes" since they pretty much sit in the same location as the stock location and hot air blowing on it constantly
Ok, you've seen the Le Baron vents like I have on my 91, and the twin vents that Trekkerjmm has on his 94. Today I found a 84 Dodge Daytona turbo that had a larger single hood vent. I personally don't think I will ever install it due to it's size and it does not really compliment the XJ body lines. I bought it anyway, because what the hell it was only $15. However, if your talking about the functional benefits of reducing underhood temps, then this would have to help. I placed it the hood of my 87 and took an overhead shot to get everyones opinion. So what do you think?

Yeah, I was concerned about that as well. But when the hood is cut and the vent is sitting flush, the gap would only be about 1/4 inch. The overhead shot was the only way to get a decent view of how it might look. I might chop the hood on the 87 since it is a parts junker anyway just to see how it will fit.
