very simple, what are you doing while they are out? remove the tires and calipers. then there is 3 13 mm bolts on the rear of the spindle that holds the shafts in, zip em out and pull the shaft out.

36mm axle nut. i use an electric impact to remove, never break a sweat.
then once you remove the three 13mm 12pt bolts, leave the bottom two in but loose about half way. then leave the socket and ratchet attached and crank your steering until the ratchet makes contact with the inner C knuckle. then with some force, just turn the steering wheel until you feel the hub pop free from the knuckle. again, never break a sweat.

use lots of anti-seize along the mounting surface when installing new hub.\

when doing u-joints, rent or loan-a-tool the u-joint press. sooo easy. again, i use my electric impact on the press and never break a sweat. i'm lazy that way.

Be careful when slide the shafts back in not to let them touch the dirt in the bottom of the housing.

Don't forget to torque the 36mm nut correctly when you re-assemble. That is what sets the wheel bearing preload. I believe it is 175 ft/lbs. Can anyone confirm that?

yup, 175 for the axle nut and 75 for the three 12pt hub bolts.

use anti-seize if you ever wanna take em off again in the future.

You know you cant reasemble and drive the XJ without the axleshafts in right?

Break that 36mm nut loose before you jack and remove a tire. It's easier when weight is on it.

The outter stub shaft and the 36mm nut are what sandwiches the unit bearing keeping it intact. Without it the unit bearing can and will seperate going down the road.. till the wheel decides to leave you.

Ditto on the breaking the nut loose with the wheel one and sittng on the ground. I had to put my spare on the do that. My aluminum rim didn't have
big enough of a center hole to fit the socket through.

DO NOT DRIVE the jeep without the axle shaft in. or at least the outer yoke in the unit bearing. A fellow Jeeper broke a axle shaft and decided to drive home without the yoke in the bearing. The bearing seperated on the highway, causing his tire to leave the vehicle, ended up wrecking his jeep. Costing him his life and his passenger (his dad) a few bumps and bruises
