That is cool. If you have the skills, go for it. I would not trust myself to make it as strong at the seams as it should be.

I would say stay away from dimond plate. Smooth steel will let you slide off the rocks and stuff better.

Here is a pic of my skid plates all made from 3/16" steel plate.
Rock sliders are 3/16" x 3" x 6" tube.

I still need to paint them.

I put a dent in the gas tank and the crossmember before I added skids. Just glad it was not to bad of dent in my new gas tank and glad I hit the cross member and not the tranny or transfer case.

+1 on not using diamond plate, those little ridges would snag alot. And If I'm not mistake its more expensive then plain sheet metal. right?

I had a local fab shop bend my plates up for me. I also have a nice chunk of 3/16" plate left over from a 4' x 8' sheet. I spent $225.00 for the full sheet and getting it cut out and bent as I wanted.

I just had to weld it all together and bolt it on.

My belly skid goes from behind LCA mounts to just past the transfer case in one piece.

No trouble with them and they are all rock tested.
