Default proportioning valve seal?

here is an odd thing to ask.

my brakes are spongy. always have been since i bought this cherokee. i replaced all the parts but the proportioning valve since i was told that if it let you have brakes when your line snapped, it was working. and it did, when the rear line broke, the proportioning valve locked off the rear line, just like i hear its supposed to do so i could still stop with the front brakes. a buddy of mine is working on a cherokee with the identical problem, squishy brakes. he power bleed them on a machine, did htem the old fashioned way, everything, just like i did and he is still having hte same problem. he did some googling and came up with removing a seal in the proportioning valve and it should stop the spongyness.

what do you guys think? i have been driving with the brakes feeling terrible for about 6 months and i get really nervous in stop and go traffic because of how they feel. i have replaced it all but the booster and proportioning valve because they tested good. what do you guys think about this seal in the proportioning valve being removed? you ever hear of this to fix the problem? anyone else have this problem and figure it out?

i gave up trying to fix it but since this new idea popped up, i am back in the game to fix the brakes

Well, no ideas, but I don't understand how anybody can drive a car for six months, or one single day for that matter, with spongy brakes? Seems totally and utterly unresponsible to me.

So my advice to your: STOP DRIVING AND GET IT FIXED OR HAVE IT FIXED!

How can you give up fixing your brakes and continue driving for six months with "the brakes feeling terrible" (your words) and getting nervous????

What if you crash into my kids crossing the road, because you've given up??

Are you nuts?

I've just re-read your posting after I posted my response. And I just can't believe what you're saying !

Here you are writing:

You call it an "odd thing to ask". Well, pardon my French but are you insane??? Please tell me I'm wrong and that you are a responsible adult who would never endanger anybody by taking a car with wonky brakes onto the road??

this is the way i am headed. they are not so bad that they don't stop but coming from bmw braking, it scares me when i hit the brakes and the pedal travels so far before stopping the jeep. sometimes the tires can lock up, other times they do not.

and this is not a daily driver jeep. its a play truck that i drive the 1 mile to work every once in a while. and with the brakes feeling so odd, i leave a lot of room between me and other cars.

Nothing ever fixed it. After that one dude answering like a jackass, I figured I would leav them and then run into him and say ot was the brakes

Nah, I adjusted everything as well as it could get and they stopped it fine but I never got them feeling like the brakes in my old BMW or the wife's wrangler.
