Default Problems after cleaning NSS

I have a 92 cherokee with 235000 miles. Reverse lights were not working, checked bulbs and fuses everything was fines after some investigation on this site cleaned the NSS. I followed a write someone posted on how to clean it, everything went smooth and worked great. About a week later one time it would not start in park, but was fine after that, now 2 months later it will not start spastically but on a fairly consistent basis in park. I have to switch from park no start to neutral no start back to neutral, an at some point it will start, seems to be no pattern to it. I tried a couple of days ago to readjust the positioning and again starred in park, neutral, reverse lights worked, but it is acting up again.

Does anybody have any thoughts on what is happening and how to correct the problem?

Thanks for any help.

For lack of a better idea...I might pick up another at the JY and take my sweet time going through it. I haven't done mine but I've messed with plenty of similar gadgets. Weak spring, something that didn't want to clean up.

Here's one of those writeups> http://bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-neut...ty-switch-nss/

Yep. and when you get to the spot where it starts in park and neutral and the reverse lights work, get that top bolt nice and tight

I have adjusted it twice now, tightening after park, neutral, and reverse all pass the test. But still having issues a day or two later.
Also would the nss effect the shifting while driving, this has only happened 2 but after I cleaned the nss.

Got it plugged in tight?

I always stretch the springs inside the NSS a teeny bit.

Without knowing, I'm going to guess no. I haven't seen that come up, the tranny has it's own computer and the tps and the kick-down cable, and should know what gear it's in! That said, I don't know myself, but I doubt it.

(I was very pleased after I took the play out of my kick-down cable)

Take it back off and go through it again. Stretch the springs a tad. Use electronics cleaner on the plug.

This.

Cleaning it is only half the solution. Restoring good contact pressure in the switch is the other half.

Thanks for the suggestions. I plan to remove and clean it again tomorrow.

Had a buddy check for continuity tonight, and discovered that rocking/shaking the shifter would affect the continuity. What does that indicate? Will cleaning it resolve that? Does this mean the nss is going bad?

It means you need to clean it and do what radi and I suggested.
