I thought there had to be a hole into the interior to fail inspection?

Get those rock guard doodads. I'm told all XJs rot out the door threshholds and those rock sliders or whatever they are called weld right in and do double duty. Somebody on here will know where to buy them. They are MIG weld-in thing, I think.

Not a bad idea, and some are actually bolt-on. Quadratech may have them, or MFGs that make them. You may have to do a little leg work.

Either way, IF YOU DO THIS TYPE OF FIX, please, PLEASE get rid of the rot that is there, take everything down to bare metal and repaint. That way all the rust is gone, and the cancer doesn't continue to eat away at your rocker(s).

By the way, it would be best to cut all the rust out, but I just cut away the outer rust and then sealed the crap out of it with rust sealer.(don't remember what brand though)

My 2000 XJ grew up in Pennsylvania so it's very rusty underneath. I'm trying to decide best way to fix my rocker panel rust which is worse than the pics here. My passenger side is rusted through both the outer and inner panels. I'm really leaning toward replacing them with painted diamond plate box tubing style rockers but for the most part this is my daily driver when my f150 is broke (and vice-a-versa). I want to weld in the rockers so that they fit in behind the stock fender moldings for a finished look. I know most of you are cringing at that idea but I really don't get off-road much. Has anyone put the box tubing rockers on for looks or is it strictly a mud and rock thing that I wouldn't understand?

I must admit, that is tempting. But I want to stay married a while longer. I don't have enough room in the driveway for the jun,,... er, vehicles, yea vehicles that I have now. If I brought another one home I'd be sleeping in it.

Is the motor any good?

no idea on the motor. after i towed it home i cranked it up after jumping it off and it ran (just barely, and got hot quick IMO) to move it to where it's at now so i could swap both axles and the Xfer/shifter assy's onto mine.

if yours runs good, swap motor/tranny/axles/everything over. could be done in a week or less with a buddy, but i say that because i'm pretty experienced/have air tools/and lenient wife and neighbors.
