Default Pre purchase questions and inspection help.

I'm looking at XJs within about 250 miles of me and obviously I can't just go look at them. I was wondering what key pre purchase questions I should ask and if those clear and it looks like and seems like its been cared for what should I look listen and feel for?

For example, if there isn't record of it it didn't get done.

Ask them when the last time, if ever, the following were either serviced or replaced because they tend to go bad: the cooling system, rear main seal, valve cover gasket, and neutral safety switch (only applicable with auto trannys) Also ask if they've ever had issues with death wobble. Also look around underneath for rust, that could be problematic. Many people also have issues with intake manifolds cracking so look for that too

U r asking for a major headache/disappointment if u don't crawl over/under, inspect bumper-2-bumper, pull dip sticks, remove caps and go for a long test drive in just about any 11+ year old used vehicle.

Its really the tiny things that tell you how the vehicle was taken care off. The color of the oil, color of coolant, are the front rims dirty with brake dust, how dirty is the air cleaner, do all the tires look properly inflated, any excessive leaks, does everything work etc.

Check ALL electronics from ALL switches- windows, door locks, rear defroster, radio (includes checking speakers to see if they all work )

Exterior: look over the entire body to check for rust or damage. Some key spots are the rocker panel area and in my experience, the rear-most corner of the horizontal trim on cargo windows develops rust.

Before looking underneath too much take it for a test drive. Your listening and possibly feeling for and pops, clunks or other odd noises. On bumps and potholes does the jeep make those noises or does it shake and/or wobble? How about all the gears acceleration wise- solid? Breaks- even and strong? 4wd? Its worth it to get a buddy to turn steering wheel back and forth from like the 10 to 2:00 position while you look underneath for loose components.

Under the hood: are oils, fluids and filters clean? What about around the engine- notice any oil leakage?

Other things...
Tire wear
All lights work (includes e flasher switch)
Doors close solid
Locks work
Get your hand under the carpet and check for moisture.
From underneath, look at floor tub area where you feet sit- check wit a screwdriver for rust stops that you can punch thru.
I'm sure I'll think of more..

97-01. I'd also like to know if I should stay away from 2000 and 2001s? Or how to make sure it isn't a bad head.
