Praying to the CF gods.
So, I have started the next big project of my life, I bought a 94 Cherokee country, that I am going to use as the platform i take all the good from my 87 Cherokee limited and make one solid Cherokee World Traveler. That my friend and I plan on driving through South America with. It is in fairly decent shape but has a serious rod knock. i have already started to pull the engine but i am stuck on one bolt. it seems there is a male Torx screw at the top of the bell housing? Is this normal? i have worked on engines at school but it has been a while since i have really done much to a car. I would love some help if anyone is in the south east MI area. I will buy the beer and i have tools just would love some one with more Cherokee knowledge than I to come show me some things.

I am pulling the motor that knocks out of the 94 taring the head down and grinding the valves, port and polish, then when the jeep is ready to have the engine put back in (grind paint and put roll on bed liner to protect the firewall) i will pull the engine and tare the block out of my decent running 87. plan on doing new rings and seals put the whole thing back together into the 94.

a few things:
1) There are two reverse torx bolts on the top of the bellhousing (size E12). All cherokees are this way.
2) you cannot easily just throw your '87 engine into the '94 due to significant internal changes and sensor/computer system changes in 1991. You have a few options, but the easiest one is this: Use the 1987 long block (the bottom half) with your 1994 flexplate and crank sensor. Use your 1994 head, intake, and exhaust, and all 1994 sensors and 1994 ECU. Basically strip the 1987 engine down to the very bear bones block and just swap that.
The reason for this is the 1987 engine (the "Renix" engine) has (among other things) different intake/exhaust ports in the head, different sensor operation, different crank indexing, and different engine management, all of which will not work with your 1994 chassis (especially not plug and play).

thank you for your input i had already planed on using the head and sensors from the 94 the only thing i was really planing on using from the 87 was the block. I would still love some help with this project if anyone out there enjoys working on engines.
Update: i got the engine out whole and it is sitting on my engine stand as i type this.

I live really close to Sterling Heights, but I know nothing about pulling engines. Wish I could be of some help, would love to take part in doing something like this just for the experience and know-how.
