Default Power window / locks issue

2000 XJ 4 door / power windows locks

Recently my drivers side window has stopped working. I took the door panel off and cleaned the connections to the window motor and the master door switch panel. No change.

I then replaced the door switch panel and cleaned the connections again, for a day it worked perfectly. The next morning, nothing. Yet later when driving home from work it’s back in action. Then today it’s out of commission.

Despite cleaning the connections with electric cleaning spray and inspecting them visually, they weren’t even dirty nor did they show any tears or breaks.

Soemtimes when I slam the door the window wants to work, sometimes when I slam the door it does nothing. So I can’t even say something is loose and when struck wiggles itself back into its spot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I think that that year or range is notorious for the wires wearing in the rubber boots inside of the doorjam. Try searching on YouTube. There should be may videos.

Also, to diagnose when you clean contacts use you multimeter to test for continuity and discontinuity to other wires, power, and ground.

If you replaced the switch and its still acting up, check the wires that pass between the body and drivers door for any breaks. Theyre the ones inside that rubber boot. Remove the door panel and work the boot into the door. Dont cut it unless you have other means to protect the wires. Check the wiring in the kick panel also.

Here is a video (not mine) covering the wires, and another for broken solder joints in the door switches, should you ever need them.

Thanks for the input. I’ll be sure to check the wires in the rubber boot when I get the time.

Also a problem I forgot to mention, seemingly randomly the doors automatically lock themselves.

Today I unlocked the passenger front door by key and the door locks itself. This doesn’t happen on the driver side when I open it. Maybe the fault is on that door? At least for the locking issue. I have never taken that door panel off.

Broken, shorting wires could be had on either side. I'd start on the driver's side, though. It would have more opens and closes in theory.

Found crunchy old wires inside the rubber boot on the drivers side. Found out it was the stock door speaker wires. Previous owner installed new speaker but left the old wires caped and yet still cut?? The green wires sheath was cracked and also had parts of the wire exposed.

As for the auto locking issue, I still think it’s the passenger side switch. While taking off the passenger side door panel the locks went haywire. Locking and unlocking as I fumbled trying to disconnect the mechanism and wires. The wires themselves look pretty good. Switch is original mopar part.

Heres a pic of broken wires I found on the drivers side. Since they aren’t even connected anymore, could it still cause an issue?

Wires got he speaker go for he radio. Unless they were arcing with other wires, then they can't affect the door locks nor power windows. Unplug the harness on the passenger side. Do you still have the issues when you operate the locks and windows from the driver's side?
