I have a 1991 jeep cherokee xj with a crazy gas gage. it pegs left and the low fuel light is on..anyone out there ever have this problem and if so how did you fix it ? all other gages work normal, I really want to get it fixed. I might add, that I had the drivers side kick panel off working on a dome light switch issue I have when this startted, I found that I wiggled all the wires behind the kick panel and the gas gage would work, so....maybe I have a loose or bad wire either comming from the tank or going to the cluster. so...any one know what the color of the wire from the take is or the wire going to the cluster is ? I have a schmatic I downloaded and it isn't much help. Thanks in advance and |I hope I hear something soon.

Possibly a ground connection loose or bad. There is a ground in that kick panel and a thread here on how to upgrade it.

Photographs, please? I don't think there there is a mandated coloring scheme for aftermarket pumps. The colors could differ.

Chart your findings for violate and resistance. I'm just guessing for these values.
At connector toward engine
Black Purple Grey
0V 12v (starting), 5v (running) 0v ->voltage measure
ground fuel pump relay, fuel pump ballast gauge ->continuity measured
At connector toward fuel pump
Black Purple Grey
Black 0 0 500 Ohms of resistance
Purple 0 0 0 /continuity
Grey 500 0 0 between wires

Let us know what you measure.
