Power steering problems.
My power steering pump went on my 6 cylinder 2000 Jeep grand cherokee in January. I went to Pep Boys and bought a pump and installed it. That pump began to make noise so I returned it and got another. The next one lasted a month and started to leak. I then went to Avance auto and bought another pump and that one went after a week. That one made alot of noise and the truck became hard to steer. I went back there and returned that pump and got a new one and installed it today. I installed this one and when you drive the truck it seems like there is no power steering. When he truck is stopped there is no power assist.
I have been working on cars for 40 years and worked in various car dealers for 15 of those years. And I have never had a problem like this.
All the pumps were installed as per instructions with new fluid added each time. I can't see 4 rebuilt pumps going bad in the span of a few months. I think I will get a steering box and change that to see if maybe that is the steering problem.

Did you make sure to bleed out all the air? Are your lines in good shape?
Next time you might grab a used pump from the junkyard and see if that works...it's probably made with better parts than the remanned ones anyway....

When I raise the car it is easy to turn, because there is no tire resistance. Ialso bled all the pumps as per instructions. Raise car turn wheel lock to lock app. 30 times.
Any ideas.

They were all rebuilt. But it's hard to believe I bought 4 that went bad. The one I installed today didn't work from the time I first drove it. The only things that weren't changed were the box and the high pressure hose.

I changed the pump on my 96 xj about 18 month ago with an AutoZone rebuild and luckly have not had a problem yet. I mostly purchase parts from AutoZone or Advance Auto and keep away from PepBoy parts. I have heard from others they have problems with their parts.
I agree the next time pull one from the junk yard and give it a try.

I had changed the belt about a week ago when I put one of the pumps in. I put the old one back on, didn't help. Just grasping at straws today. I think I will get a used power steering pump tomorrow and if that dosen't solve it I will change the box.

I am going to get a junkyard pump tomorrow and put that on. I took off the hoses and they are fine nothing inside them. I blew them out with my compressor.
I really think it is a bad pump again, because the steering box was fine through out most of this.
And by the way thanks for the printout from the manual that is just what I needed.
