Default power to starter

Ok....the other day I had a problem with not starting so I got down and looked at the starter and sure enough the two wires going to the starter are almost broke in half right before they go into a little black box and then bolted to the starter....can I just cut them off before the black plastic piece and put new eyes on the wires or does the black plastic piece serve a purpose?

yes I will post a pic tomm. I am at work right now and drove my yukon today.....what I am talking about is the only two wires that go to the starter one is thick one is bout half as thick...they come from the battery then right before they are attached to the starter there is a piece of black plastic...the wires are almost broke completely away from the black plastic...its like they run through the plastic piece and then there are two eyelets that attach to the starter

dont know if it would have anything to do with it or not...but I just put a 136 amp alt on it and my volt meter on my dash takes a dive when I turn on my a/c or my fog lights...would that connection at the starter be the culprit..my battery is good and the new alt is good connections at the battery are good..I even added another ground to the engine after cleaning all other grounds

Chrysler likes to do that - there aren't any electronics or anything in that moulded rubber block, it's just there to locate the wires for the "tech" (since Chrysler techs seem more like "chimps" to me, from what I've dealt with them...)

Same arrangement on the back of the alternator - that black block doesn't actually do anything but locate all of the eyelets for assembly.

Short form - cut flush and reterminate. The large lead is 8AWG, and the smaller one is 14AWG.
