My 89 did this to my daughter twice, temperature gauge reading normal, just below 210. I diagnosed the 2nd fan relay was bad and replaced it, did it again (overflowed) last night after work. I picked up the Jeep this morning and noticed the cap is an AC Delco marked 0.9 Bar which equals 13 lbs. My XJ has been converted to open cooling system so I got a new 16# cap at NAPA and drove it 40 miles home; so far, so good.

Radiator caps are cheap insurance.

Follow up: I went with the Stant 10231. It was cheap and it has solved the problem, thank you.

I'll take your advice and change my safety lever cap. Can you explain why they're not good to use?

now I have same issue as the cap psi
Is it 13psi, 12psi or 16psi
I have 94 Cherokee Sport, 4.0L
When checking with AZ and OReilly, their books list 16psi for the 2.5L, 4cyl, and 13psi for 4.0L.
I have believe closed system with overflow reservoir . What is the difference in open system? Seems open system means no pressure build up? What am I missing?
