is it possible, and worth it?
Is it possible to add a transfer case and front drive line to a 2wd, and make it a 4wd? I have a great '94 XJ. But I would love to have a 4wd one. Mine's only 2wd. Instead of buying another one, and going through all the uncertainties of whether it was a good deal or not. I was wondering if it's possible to add 4wd to mine?
it's a '94 XJ 4door, 5-speed, 2wd, 4.0L.
Thanks,
J

so it is possible, and now, would it be worth it? Maybe if I found a rolled over or totaled XJ to swap the tcase, front end, and cross member, and rear end, and drive shaft? Also, mine is a 5-speed, so is there a difference between the auto, and standard tcases?
Just wondering?

do some research. Transfer cases can be had for a couple hundred, same for an axle etc. Get on www.car-part.com and find a wrecked 4x4 with the parts you need. See if they will make you a good deal on them, if not hit the next shop on the list, there are hundreds of them.

i will suggest unless your jeep is in mint condition i would just sell it. then buy antother 4x4 or keep yours buy one for cheap and use your good engine and other parts lol i bought my jeep for 500 and it is very solid with minor kinks

it is possible.
BUT you have to rebuild the ENTIRE transmission with a 4wd output shaft.
the t-case will not bolt on to a 2wd trans. period.
so, for you to do the swap, it's required to remove the transmission in order to either A. replace it with 4wd one, or
B. (worst option) disassemble the 2wd case and install output shaft from donor junk 4x4 trans along with output shaft onto your current 2wd trans.
and if anyone tells you it's best to sell the jeep, they're crazy. the entire conversion doesn't cost more than $1000 if you piece it together, and a bit of time involved means you still have a vehicle that's bought and paid for.

a 2wd to 4wd swap is nothing new. I know personally around 20 guys who have done it, local to me. most comanches were 2wd at least around here, so alot of folks on comancheclub swap to 4wd using cherokees as donors.
necessary for the swap
4wd trans (matched to your trans...ax15) and t-case (np242 with 23 spline input or np231 with 23 spline input)
shift linkages
shifter handle
front driveshaft
rear driveshaft needs shortened or replaced (there's tons of them out there easier to replace)
front axle.
get any of these parts from a 1991 to 1996 jeep cherokee for direct swap.
this is completely bolt on. no cutting required for shifter handles, nothing. it's already done at factory and just has blockoff plates.

I"m up in NH. I bought the jeep cause it was the right price, and needed something quick. But as you guys know, fell in love with it after I got it running good. The jeep was originally sold in HA, then moved to CA, and then to ME, where I found it. That probably why it only 2wd.
