Default Possible V8 swap input welcome.

I will first say that I am new to this forum. I did bounce around and read some of the posts and I might offend some here in asking about a possible V8 swap. Sometimes it is better to ask forgiveness than permission. So please forgive me...I am thinking of removing the 4.0 I6. I am having a lot of valve train noise, and I am not sure of the milage this engine has acquired as it is not the original. In doing some research I found out that the AW4 tranny was used by many other companies, i.e. Toyota and Iszuzu. This is interesting because in the Iszuzu it was married to the GM 2.8 Liter V6...a 60 degree V6 block that uses the same belhousing bolt pattern as the 3.1 and 3.4. This is interesting as a Caddilac 4.9 V8 uses the same bolt pattern. Any other thoughts are welcome.

I dont htink the aw4 would stand much abuse behind a mildly built v-8, butyou can try it. I Know advance adapters sells a frame mount kit to mount v-8's under the hood. The kit does move the engine over to the right. I forgot how much though, so If you are running a passenger drop axle could cause issues. Ask me how I know.

There are cooling issues that have to be dealt with when doing this swap.

The AW4 would have no prob handling a built V8. It's the very same trany that Toyota uses in the Supra's with a auto and they have pushed over 900hp through the AW4 with out issue..

I have seen several XJs online, that have a SBC in them, so it has, and can be done. If you do it, take a lot of pictures, as I'm sure there would be a ton of interest around here for something like that!!

I am sure it wasnt a stock AW4. The aw4 is almost bullet proof. The biggest problem I have with them.. is they are impossible to keep cool in wheeling situations.

Right- a big honkin cooler and a modified valve body and its indestructible and can handle the power. stock, itll melt.

IMHO theres no reason to replace the 4.0

I agree a stroked 4.0 to 4.7 would be the best avenue. A lot less hassle and will perform and last.

Though I was at the complete opposite side of this, I personally think that if you chose to invest in a V-8 it's cool. Everybody has their own view. I an very partial to the I-6 design but hey muscle car VS import. It's an ever going battle. Before you do make sure you wiegh the cost. It can be very expensive. I mean very!! How much power you want? You can buy a new I-6 on ebay for around like 1600. An I-6 is very reliable and will last through abuse and overheating... IF you do it take some pics so we all can see.. Keep us in the loop.

Someone posted a pic of a nice, factory-appearing red one a week or so ago. It filled the engine compartment right up.

Default Ford Anyone????

chevy, chevy, chevy....Yeah its cheap and its everywhere, but ford makes a smallblock too ya know, and an I6, or even some bigger stuff. Better in my opinion.....just throwin that out there.

An engine swap that would be a direct bolt on would be great but its gonna cost you after you get everything fabbed, less if your handy with that stuff, a hole helluva lot more if your not.
