Default Possible purchase...but there's a catch.

First post, but I have owned an XJ and an MJ in the past.
I am looking at a 1987 XJ, 4.0, AX15, 150K, 4X4. Looks to be a nice rig, but the owner let me in on the fact that when he "engine brakes" it sounds like it is trying to engage the transfer case (light grinding noise). If you shift into neutral and hit the brakes...no noise at all. In 4 Hi or 4 Lo...no noise. New clutch within 3,000 miles. Shifts with no problems.
Does this sound like synch rings? Any ideas?
The price is right ($800) if this is not a big issue.
Thanks for any feedback. I can't wait to get back in an XJ and spend some time on the trails.

How do you know it's a AX-15? Did you visually check for yourself or did the PO tell you that?

The '87's came with the BA-10.

PO told me. I have not visually checked that. Replacement tranny maybe? He may be mistaken, of course, and probably is. Never had the BA-10. Any good?
