If it does it while turning the wheel and NOT moving, its likely ball joint/wheel bearing.
If it does it while turning the wheel, and IS moving (usually at low speeds, reverse, parallel parking, etc.) its likely Axle U-Joint
Could be various bushings, etc. But the best thing to do would be to get under, and really play with stuff, and see what you can get to move. And in addition to this, get someone to move the wheel back and forth, with the jeep off, and look for movement in the various joints and steering components.

Mine was doing this for a long time too after I put the lift on. I tightened everything up front and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. It gradually lessened, and when I had it in the shop recently they said some of the track bar bracket bolts were loose and they tightened them up for me. I don't think I've heard it since then. I tightened those bolts when I was looking for the problem, but maybe the shop got them REALLY tight for me, I dunno. My track bar has a heim joint too, so maybe that was part of it?

Cannot believe no one mentioned ball joints or sway bar links yet. How to check for loose ball joints.
1) put front axle on jack stands
2) take 3ft or longer Pry bar (or long strong object) and Pry up directly under the tire
3) shine a flashlight onto ball joints and see if there is up/down play when you Pry up.
4) If bad, replace. Doing all 4 of mine this Friday.
Note: when replacing ball joints it is wise to do the axle u joints and wheel hub bearings while you're in there since they all have to come off anyways.
How to check for loose sway bar bushings/links
1) grab that sucker and shake it (bar and links). If it clunks, you found the clunk
Note: not a bad time to upgrade to quick disconnect sway bar links if you feel the need.
How do I know these things? I'm doing all of them this Friday, the axle u joints, ball joints, and bearings. Just a little bundle of fun that'll be...

My wife had this problem on her 97 Grand Cherokee and it turned out to be a stone in the CV joint that got through a hole in the boot.
my bolts also snapped on my 94 jeep Cherokee and now the car won't turn at all can I replace the bolts for the car to move again or is there something else wrong?
solid now. have fun!!
Hello out there im a cert. Tech and just came across the popping issue . I found its your track bar thath connects to your center link . If you have someone start the vehicle while you climb under have them crank the wheel back and fourth and youll see. Now why its loading up causing that bearing to pop i dont know but will post when i do.

Mine would pop when moving and turning the wheels about half way to lock, turned out to be the new unit bearing was bad and would pop when turning sharply. Replaced it and the noise went away.
I had the same issue, i looked everywhere and say that the steering box was slightly moving when the pop occurred. I tightened the 3 bolts and no pop. I think a thread was catching the frame and make that horrible popping. Hope this helps
