Hello fellow jeepers,

I have a problem I cant figure out. When I'm driving and stopping I hear a poping noise coming from the rear left tire. The noise is connected to the brakes somehow it only makes it when i'm slowing down and its proportionate to the rotation of the tire hence it starts quick and as the car slows down the poping noise slows down and stops when the car stops.

Its almost obious that it would be the drum brake but i took it appart and I see nothing loose or worn out.

Any ideas?

Are you sure it's connected to the brakes and not a rock stuck in the tread of your tire?

LOL ^^^ I'll have to remember that one.

No the noise is not a tire since it only makes the noise when i press on the brakes and when i'm slowing down. It doesnt make sense... its like a rock on the brakes only at slow speeds, but I checked the brakes and didnt see anything. I'm starting to think its the rear differential. Could it make a that noise when there is no load on the rear diff? and hence the slowing down on the brakes?

I have that front poping noise too when i make slow turns but the rear poping noise concerns me more. I'm going to try and change the rear differential oil and see if that fixes it, only other thing would be to re do the entire rear brake system (pads springs)

I'm just now following up all my threads..... after several years lol figure I'd save someone else the trouble I had. Found the solution.

And it was..... loose drum brake shoe!

I appreciate the follow-up! Did you replace the hardware? How did you resolve the loose shoe?

Get rid of the rear brakes. They only do 30% of the stopping anyway. Unless they are wet, then they do about 1%.
