x3 on ujoints, grab one hand on both sides of the shafts and rotate opposite directions, both ways (hopefully this is making sense) and if there's ANY play, it's time for replacement.

check your drag link and tie rod.....with the steering unlocked have a buddy lightly turn the wheel back and forth and look over the linkages, i had a terrible crack and pop and it was the drag link where it bolts to the axle but i was unable to spot it without a buddy turning the wheel back and frorth

My old Jeep did that. I checked it out and there was a bolt or something catching on a metal guard that covers the bottom of the engine area... if that makes any sense. You may not have the guard and this may not be it, but it's worth checking out and will save a lot of hassle.

I have 92 xj w/same prob. Its a stress cracked frame at track bar frame mount. Im surprised I havent seen any mention of this weak spot. Welding will work but this area really needs reenforcement with plate steel, same as steering box.

Got the same problem. I will have to check out all of the following. I was wondering if it could be bad engine mounts. Axle joints & hubs replaced when I did the lift kit. I have greased, inspected a number of times & I have just lived with it. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Lifted?
Is your jeep lifted? If so you will probably need to get a " Drop pit-man arm" it will lower your steering links to original height. I didnt have one and it would pop all the time.
