So what. Get over it. Two different types of people, part changers and trouble shooters, that's just the way it is.
BTW- If it matters I'd guess head gasket too, leak down test is probably what you want to do. It's easy and fast and then you'll have a major part to change :P FUN

in the fsm for a 97 xj it state that the sync sensor sends a signal to the pcm when the injectors fire
maybe its going bad and causing the injectors to squirt late or early in the firing order hence the whit smoke coming out the air box thats going by all oter timing and fifring orders are correct

So far you have replaced: TPS, CPS, IAC, Fuel Filter, Battery, Alternator, Plugs, Wires, Starter and Distributor Cap. You need to check your Compression and Fuel Pressure.

You put 80 pounds of pressure in the spark plug hole with the cylinder at TDC using the fittings supplied with the tool (they cost about $60 as I recall). You regulate the input pressure and measure the loss. If you have more than a 25% leakdown, corrective action MIGHT be required...but maybe not. 25% is the number they use for aircraft engines...obviously, a more important and critical use than jeeps...so maybe you can live with leakdown of 50%. I don't know that answer. I do know that you can do the test on each cylinder and isolate exactly where the leak is occuring, if there is a leak at all.
By a tester from Aircraft Supply in Lansing, MI. It'll have instructions on how to use it. Or, just cruise out to the local airfield and find an A&P (airframe & powerplant) mechanic - he'll have a tester and know exactly how to use it and it might be cheaper than buying one for a single use.
Good luck.
