why would it need crank bearings and a water pump unless he overheated it?

Crank bearings are easy though - just drop the pan. They rotate in and out (2 piece bearing).

There's a question. Anybody hear of slapping in a set of rod bearing inserts AFTER it sounded up and have it work out? Granted the journal has already ready taken a beating....

I'd say a visual inspection of the journal surface would be in order to make that decision - if it was badly scored I'd say the efforts would be wasted

No that will not work if the journal has taken a beating it must be machined and an oversize bearing will be used. (I think I understood your question, if not sorry)

I was always taught if you can feel it with your fingernail then it needs machined.

Just was wondering if anyone gave that a go. I tried it years ago on an old 20R. I cleaned it all nice and smooth, but nothing I had in my tool box could make it round again! It was toast and stayed that way. (I did buy a new crank, but found another Celica. That crank is still in the box, rusting around here somewhere)
Just looked on rockauto, about $17+ shipping for 4.0 rod inserts. Or they sell singles.
OP, If you end up going that way, you can put Pastiguage at two spots 90* apart, (say 4:30 & 7:30), and get an idea how out of round it is.
