I am planning a several day trip into some of Colorado's more back-woods areas and want to maybe try my hand at catching some smaller game. Does anyone have any suggestions for items to include? I am mainly looking for methods of producing food, water, and fire for an indefinite amount of time. I mainly am planning on hunting small game, I do not have a gun license or a gun. I do not plan on wandering too far away from my jeep.


Things I already am including:
Small knife (3")
Larger knife (5")
BB gun, ammo
Slingshot
Tin pan for boiling water
Water filter
Axe
Field manual 21-76
(first aid kit part of jeep stuff)

Anything else I should add?

• Hit the surplus store for water purification tablets.
• A Multi-tool
• Cell Phone (if you get svc. there, if not a GPS and let someone know where you'll be. You might wanna check into one of those emergency help beacons skiers use.)
• A tool kit and a tire plug kit. Bring along starting fluid just in case you knock a bead off.
• Extra food and water, just in case.
• Pillows and a blankets. (Not just to sleep, but if you get caught out there, they'll keep your azz warm 'til someone finds y'all)
• Tinder box, Zippo w/ x-tra fluid, waterproof matches
• Zip-lock bags to put essential things that are affected my the elements in.
• WATCH OUT WHERE THE HUSKIES GO AND DON'T YOU EAT THE YELLOW SNOW.

I'll prob. think of more in a little while <~ I did.

I assume you have trail maps for the area, and have experience camping in the cold.

I do have experience camping in the cold, and I will get trail maps for that area, however this trip is planned for this summer.

it still does stay cold up at higher alts. as long as you have a good 4 season tent and a good cold weather sleeping bad youll be good. experience is the most important thing. put a CB on your jeep as well.

I have the world's best sleeping bag, it's a narrow one-sleeper and has a hood. I woke up one morning to find my rain guard had slipped off my tent (Word of advice: Get to the campsite before nightfall) and the bag was coated in a sheet of ice from freezing rain. I felt fine...right up until I got out. I have most of the non-nutritional things set to go, but I was mainly seeing what all I'd need to be able to generate my own food/water. As a general rule, I want to stay away from plants.

You might consider a small tackle box w/ fishing line.. Can make a fishing pole from a stick this way. flairs could be useful depending..flashlight and extra batteries..a machete, small shovel and pick axe. Oh and most important a COMPASS..pocket hand warmers and feet warmers can be helpful if it gets cold....some sort of twine string/rope. For night time one of the flash lights that straps to your head is very handy...If I can think of other stuff I'll post more..

I totally forgot about the fishing line, good idea. One thing I should note is that this is going to be my jeep and I out in the woods, not just me. I will still have that.

Edit: I'll bring a human buddy too.

Well since it's summer, if you REALLY wanna pack, don't forget to bring along...

A few hotties and a blender for 'rita's... They can keep ya warm if ya get a bit chilly also!

Here is my list from when I lived in CO, of things to take into the high country.

1.a two foot Bow saw (way less effort than an axe)
2.a small axe (for splitting)(split wood burns way better)
3.a skinning knife
4.a multi tool
5.fire a Zippo, extra fluid, flints, and a magnesium striker
6.cotton ***** gooped up with petroleum jelly (works great as a fire
starter, especially when tinder is damp)
7.folding type shovel
8.toilet paper
9.insect repellent (very important in summer in Colorado)
10.sunscreen
11.first aid kit
12.duct tape
13.signal mirror
14.a small blue tarp
15.rope, twine
16.chlor-floc water purification tablets
17.flashlight
18.map and compass
19.guitar string (works well for making snares in a survival situation)
20.appropriate clothing and footwear
21.very basic fishing kit (line, split shot, hooks, a jar of salmon eggs, a few flies are a good idea too)


Take food and water, let at least 3 people know where you will go, and get a fishing /small game combo license. If you think you might need, it take it. Remember it can get dangerously cold at altitude even in the summer. (when I lived at 10,000 ft. our 4th of July carnival got snowed out two years in a row!!!)

Very nice list, thanks billy....but just to remind you guys:
My real goal was to be able to live off the fat o' de land, I was planning on boiling water to sanitize it, along with maybe a filter. For food, I was planning on hunting small game/fishing. For fire, I am still kinda looking for some means of being able to produce a light an (essentially) indefinite number of times. The magnesium striker looks like my method for producing a light. I will also be bringing a good ol' zippo as a backup in case the striker doesn't work out. I will have canned food as well as some other "fallback" supplies to make sure I don't go hungry, or dehydrate. I do plan on brining up AT LEAST one other person with me, hang true to the good ol' buddy system. I will make sure they are capable of operating my vehicle in case I am incapacitated (hopefully they'll take me with them ).

Every time I go on a trip, I make sure I leave "anchors" of people who know where I'm going and have information for my exact location. I do plan on getting a CB radio setup.

Oh, one thing I remembered that I think you guys missed:
Generator/Jumper system (for dead battery).
