No play up and down but it should have some backlash on it. Did it have play before? Did you tighten the nut down enough? There is a crush sleeve in there so if it doesn't get tightened right you won't have the correct preload on the bearing.

There might be a crush sleeve.

What jeeps didn't come without the crush sleeves? I know a lot of the ford axles just used shims under the bearing for the preload but I thought most of the jeeps were set up with crush sleeves. I am not saying you are wrong I was just wondering for my own knowledge.

Yeah play everywhere is bad. I wouldn't run it unless you want to destroy your rear end. Did it have it before you pulled off the yoke to change the seal? I would say you probably didn't tighten up the nut tight enough. It is a lock nut so it will feel tight even before you get it seated.

Inspect the fix!!!! Just because you have a leak doesn'tequall fixing a compenent. Leaky bearing seal are caused by age/wear of the seal itself or wear/Damage to the bearing they protect.

When you changed the seal... Did you install a NEW crush sleeve? Did you inspect the bearings? Sounds like the pinion bearing was toast, causing the leak. But, then if you didn't replace the crush sleeve with the seal, you might not be able to reset the backlash correctly.

All 8.25" axles have crush sleeves but very few D30's have them.
