Pinion Bearings...
I need to replace the pinion bearings on the rear axle (8.25) in my 92 XJ. I am capable of doing but was wondering if I will need to set the backlash after changing the bearings. Thanks!

you do not need to reset everything! But do make sure you check it and make sure it is within spec. reuse the old spacers for the pinion That will set pinion depth back where it needs to be. Usually (this is on GM axles) I have to take away ~.003" from the left or right to get it in the middle of the spec range (my OCD everything in the middle, average lol)

Yes. I'm pretty sure you have to install a new crush sleeve. I've heard of reusing the old one but someone with more experience than me will have to tell you how. I thought the D30 gear replacement was going to be the tough one but that crush sleeve in the 8.25 gave me a fit.

8,25" axles use side adjusters to set the backlash.
Replacing the pinion bearings will require a new crush collar, setting the rotating torque, proper pinion depth, setting the backlash....
No different than installing a new set of gears.

Well thanks for the info guys! I ripped it apart today and found that the pinion bearings, carrier bearings, brake drums, pads, & brake hardware (springs and such) is shot!!! Looks like I will be doing a little junk yard shopping this weekend!

Yep, that's what I would do. The carrier bearings are not all that bad to set. But....the pinion....well I thought it would drive me crazy!!
