Ive already decided to keep the 410s, instead of going to 456's, and have picked out the powertrax so i can install it, will save me a ton of money. Just need 410s in the hp30 now

Remember you have to change the carrier on a D30 when you go to a 4:10 to replace 3:55 or 3:73 gears.

well, ha, changed my mind again. I got 4.56 gears for the HP30, new carrier, and master install kit. A guy I know is going to do both my axles for some cash, but it will be MUCH cheaper than taking it to a shop. I should get the axle back in a week or so, then ill replace the Ujoints, and the bushings, and it will be ready for paint.

For the 8.8, I will be buying 4.56 gears, install kit, and new drive and coast bearings. Also need to pick up new breaks, i believe the rotors are ok. Should have both axles in by the end of feb.

while you have the axles off and all, you should look into heavy duty diff. covers right away.

there are a ton out there. I got rock crushers. OKCJEEPER posted a link to the Solid diffs. on sale. great prices for sure.

here's a link to them on their site..

I wouldnt mind doing something similar for my jeep except I only need to change the front : p.

How do you tell a HP dana 30 from a Lp? I currently have an 01, like yours, and have the same lp dana 30.

Low pinions are weaker, they came on the 2000's and 01's. All previous years used High Pinion. BUT our newer axles did come with the stronger Ujoints (not that that makes up for it haha)

JakeWI...I am definitely getting matching diff covers, just havent picked a brand yet.

Came out of a 1996 Explorer. It is 410, open. So thats getting new gears as well. Also needs new drive/coast bearings.

1995 and up explorers come with the 8.8 with disc brakes, and 31 spline shafts.

You can also get one of the Superior Super 8.8 upgrade packages with stronger axle shafts, lockers and such and no need to run spacers at that point from what I have read. Plus you get a nice strong axle.
