How fast do you want to go and how much money do you have? It's not any different than any other engine as far as performance. A combustion engine is nothing more than a big air pump, the more air you can get in it the better it performs.

You can start with a bigger exhaust, header, free flowing intake, head porting and polishing, bigger valves, installing a stroker crank, boring out the cylinders for lager pistons, or possibly an engine swap.

Try a search on any of the terms and I'm sure you'll have enough reading until the end of the month....

1990 2wd 2dr 5spd
5.0 mustang intake filter
msd ignition
computer tricks to make it run richer (although if i did it again id do it different for extra fuel-like split sec or something like that)
3.55 gear swap
open exhaust
a shot of the good stuff.

whenever you start upgrading remember your engine is an equilateral triangle.

air, spark and fuel.

if you upgrade one you need to upgrade the rest.

best of luck!!!

they make super charges and turbos for the 4.0 but they are about 4grand...

well, for the absolute cheapest. you could just swap in a junkyard axle from a different xj with a better gear ratio

yea for the gearing just get either junkyard axles or look on craigslist. 3.55 geared diffs are the most common ratios out there for cherokees.

One thing that will help you, that I don't see anyone doing is using exhaust wrap to cut back on the unde rhood temps. You could do it if you removed the intake manifold. I personally would avoid removing the exhaust because the probability of having a broken bolt and having to drill it out is high. I'm not lucky when it comes to drilling out bolts (even with using a left handed bits and a drill) or using an ez out.

The one thing you could do that's a cheap fix is pulling out the restrictor in the air box. I'd also recommend getting another air temp sensor. Go to a yard and pull one and the wire harness connector. Chances are it will be good after you clean it up. Splice an extension so you can just plug in your new sensor, mounted on the side of the air box. Just drill a hole, and screw it in. Its plastic so it will self thread. Leave the original in its place to act as plug/seal on the manifold. During the winter you unplug and use the one in the manifold and during the summer use the other on your air box.

If you use the airbox sensor during the winter, you'll have longer warm ups but it will run leaner, decrease mpg and give you dash of cheap power.
