Question Passenger side seatbelt

Just bought a 99 xj. The passenger side front seat belt will work fine one moment, and lock up the next. It seems to work in warm weather, and not in cold. Is there a tutorial on how to check this??

The inertial reel is supposed to lock up during maneuvers that go past a certain G range to help secure occupants.

If you pull the belt out too fast, it will lock up then too.

Safety reasons.

Why is the inertial wheel locking up when it's cold then? Is it cleanable? Or replaceable?

I suppose you could get in where the reel is and squirt a little PB Blaster on it and see if that helps.

I think the point is that he isn't exerting the needed speed or G forces on the belt to make it lock up. So why is it locking?
I sometimes have this problem. Even VERRRRRRY slow pulls and I can't buckle up.

I would have to assume there's crud in there keeping the piece that makes it lock from disengaging completely. Mine sometimes does that as well, but not that often. Last time it did, I sprayed WD-40 down at the reel and it seems to have helped for now. If it happens again with any of them, I'm taking them all out to clean and lube.

EDIT: Mine have had mud in them, so that probably contributes to the problem as well. Have yours, just out of curiosity?

WD-40 is not a lube. You probably just washed some gunk away.

Check for Gummy Bears, coins, candy wrappers, spilled sugar laden soft drinks, dog hair, toothpicks, paper clips etc in the mechanism.
