Default Partial Gauges

'96 Cherokee Sport

The Tach, Speedo and Fuel gauges are inoperative, while the Temp, Oil and Volt all work. This happened when driving over railroad tracks.

It was suggested that the #7 fuse blew (didn't) or that the body ground under the rear seat was bad... did not find it.

Any ideas other than the ever present connections on the cluster?

This is my daughter's (and my) project Jeep and a daily driver... Hope to get it offroad in future years!

Thanks!

Question UPDATE

Well, it is not the fuses, nor the gauge connections in the back. This one has a plastic modular clamp style connector that would be "impossible" to come loose without intent. I guess corrosion could affect it but did not on this one.

So, I am back to the previously suggested "body ground" or bad gauges themselves. Seeing the printed circuit board technology, I could see where a single ground circuit might be in play for just the Tach, Speedo and Fuel gauges, but without a schematic I do not know.

Anyone have any ideas where "under the rear seat" is for a body ground, please let me know. I'll have to start tracing wires and I am just not that patient!

Thanks!

Does your airbag light come on? If I go down rough roads I lose my tach and spedo and my airbag light come on. Any ideas? I need to have this fixed ASAP as I am leaving for the military in a week and my wife will be useing my jeep while I am gone. Any info would be great. Thanks!

I read of others getting an Airbag light, but I do not.

Thank you for your service! Be safe and God bless.

I too have a 96 that's for myself as a daily driver (my Suburban is killing me on fuel) and for my daughter's first vehicle in a few months. I've got speedo but no tach nor fuel gage. I'm going to pull the cluster in the coming days and see what comes out of it. This happened after I replaced the headlight switch. I suspect a ground problem.
