P1698 DTC and "no buS" on Odo
Hi guys! I have a 2000 Cherokee 4.0 4WD. Just wanted to post this in case it helps someone else out.
The Symptoms: Engine overheated (thanks Heater Core). Remedied that. The next day, my engine randomly stalls as I'm coming to a red light (lucky I was going straight and already stopping). Engine cranked right back up and everything was normal. One week after that, I was coming to a stop (again, lucky) and it stalled again. This time, it would crank and crank but wouldn't start. Odometer read "no buS" and my CEL came on - code P1698 (which, apparently, means it could be about 20 different problems-according to all the threads on this DTC). My voltmeter and gas gauge weren't reading anything. I touched my battery cables together for about 20 seconds to clear the code. Jeep started and seemed to run fine and I was able to park it at the friend's house we were visiting. Come back out 3 hours later, starts fine, get on the Interstate, engine gets up to temp, it stalls again (unlucky, this time). Could not clear code or start vehicle this time.
Long story short, I made a best guess that it was my CKPS (crankshaft position sensor) mainly based on the fact that it was heat related and that typically loose grounds or bad connections don't care how hot it is. Replaced for $60 at Advance Auto Parts (use retailmenot.com for coupon codes - it's the BEST). Jeep has ran fine now for 2 days. I will update in about two weeks as to whether that truly fixed my problem or if I made a bad best guess.
