My money is on the NSS. Try cleaning it first. Very common problem. Do a search.

The Transmission Range Sensor/Range Switch (TRS) is commonly referred to as the "NSS" hereabouts.

Yea, I did some research and came up with the NSS being suspect, but the jeep starts up and shifts well (no overdrive though) and backup lights work when supposed to.....the previous owner had the NSS changed out 2.5 years ago........could it still be out of adjustment enough to throw a code?.........mechanic believes it's the trans control module under drivers side dash........still researching.......thanks for info guys.....

I went thru this a few months ago. First cleaned NSS, replaced NSS, replaced brake light switch (another possible cause), finally ended up replacing solenoids.

Everything seemed to fix the problem for a bit but then it would come back. Replacing the solenoids was the fix in the end for me. BUT certainly does not hurt to service the NSS first and check the brake light switch. Both are easy to check and basically free to service. Clean the NSS and insure it is adjusted well. Check your brake light switch to insure it isn't out of adjustment or needing replaced. Then if all else fails move on to solenoids. I got my kit from Cascade Transmission. it was like ~$75 for the 3 solenoids and a filter / gasket. It is an easy job should it come to that.

I should add... FWIW, I was never throwing any codes at any time when dealing with the issue.

Well, I'm letting the check engine light alone for now and will concentrate on repairing a few holes in the drivers side floor (the right way).....I wish the original owner never had that cruddy black undercoating sprayed on the underside...the stuff is rock hard but breaks off in chunks.......rust formed even with yearly rust treatment on my part ....bummer.....still, a labour of love.....lol

Funny, i just had a similar issue happen to me. Borg, does yours still shift smoothly after it warms up?

Long story short on mine, it seems to run fine but after it drives for a little while (15 minutes or so?) it wants to do they fabled "stay in 4th gear" unless you manually put it into 1-2. Fluid is fine, i doubt it is the TV cable, i suppose it could be the grounds as i did the headlight harness mod a week ago, but im doubtful of that too.

I guess i can check the NSS. I do know mine needs adjusted since the reverse lights dont like to come on.

Tacklebox, you found all that for 75 bucks? dang, on Amazon they want 160 for three solenoids alone.
