I moved the pin around while it was being cranked in case holding it in place was not getting a good connection. I repeated this 3 times......I am checking the wiring harness, connector end, not the coil rail itself. Please let me know if I am doing this wrong.

You're okay. Read post 14 above.

thanks. I thought I was going nuts.......crank sensor. I have one, but I cannot get the old one out. I hate to say it but those two bolts on the bell housing are defeating me. I'm ready to drop it off at the shop.

Before jumping on the CPS, back probe the connector wires using a safety pin with the connector attached to the rail and engine cranking, then see what you get.

Also (it's a long shot but) if you have a ignition coil capacitor (see pic), unplug it and see if the problem reoccurs. I've never heard of these things causing issues but if you have one eliminate it from the equation.

I just saw your last post now. I already dropped it off at the shop with the new CPS in the passenger seat and told the guy to replace it. I was fed up with it. 96 degrees, no shade, and besides working on my XJ I work outside all day every day. Can't wait for the temps to drop. My registration ran out the 31st and I never got it inspected. I have to get it fixed so it can pass inspection.

thanks for everyone's help. If it is still giving me issues when I get it back I will probe the wires with the connector hooked up to the coil rail, and check the ignition coil capacitor

I here you on the scorching heat and working outside, it's hard to check things and test wires when you have to wipe your brow every 30 seconds. Was 97 two days ago and I was just changing the plugs on the wifes' Lincoln, sweated off at least 10lbs LOL
