Overheating top hose hot btm hose cold.
Heard what i believe is air in system. no heat when over heating. thermostat seems to be working. cant get 3 miles without system pegging the temp meter. had it towed home didnt want to run the chance of blowing head gasket or warping heads. Need advice.. How do i burp the system. Do you think its a bad heater core or water pump or both?

The radiator is blocked or the water pumps impeller is worn out. Or both, even. Something is keeping the coolant from circulating, and either of those will do it. How old are they? If you dont know, replace them.

ok. How do i burp the system? would that have anything to do with the overheating? I will replace the water pump. i don't know when anything was done. bought this jeep only 5 months ago. did not come with a mechanic history.

I forgot about the burping. It should do that on its own, just leave the cap off with the engine running. All ive ever done is remove the radiator cap, fill it, then let the engine idle with the heater on full. When the coolant level drops, i fill some more. When it stops dropping, i stop filling and stick the cap back on, fill the overflow to the hot mark, and drive off. Never had an issue. Sometimes i just fill and squeeze the upper hose slowly with the cap off until the bubbles stop. Never had any issue doing that either. Did just that with the Mustang a couple weekds ago. Temp is right it should be.

I would just rebuild the cooling system. Judging by the number of overheating threads on this forum. It almost seems like it should be a right of passage for a new Cherokee owner.
