Default Overheating Please HELP

My 1997 xj Runs good in the winter but first warmth this year it overheated. Going down the road it is fine but as soon as I stop my jeep heats up. I replaced the thermostat and checked the water pump. My electronic fan hasn't been working right though. It either spins slow or not at all. I checked the plug and it doesnt even get voltage. I replaced the relay and it still doesnt work. What should I do???

By the sound of it your fan seems to be working corectly, except for the no power part. the fan should run only when the ac is on or the temp is above 210. Is the fan clutch on the other fan working? Is your radiator plugged up with mudd and road crap?

The regular fan works and I tried to turn the AC on and it didn't make the electric fan come on. The E-fan won't even turn if you try to turn it when the engine is off. The radiator seems to be fine also. I meant to say it spins slow or not at all. It never turns fast.

Does the fan work if you jump it directly to the battery? Do you have power at the plug?

This diagram might help. check both of the fuses, fuse 11 at the junction box, and fuse 5 at power distribution center. If the electric fan will not turn by hand when its not powered up then the motor is probably shot. make sure you have good air flow going threw your radiator and there is nothing clogging it. If you can blast your heater for several minutes and the air stays hot this means that water is flowing. so if your engine is still getting above temp with the fans running then your radiator needs replaced.

Funny thing. I have the same exact problem. Started last night. I spoke with my buddy who is a mechanic and he said the radiator could be plugged with dirt and crap, or the clutch is shot. BUT, I bought it this past October and it did not have a thermostat. Put in a new thermostat and no problems all winter. First day in the 70's and it starts to over heat. When I shut it off it spills antifreeze. Now I know why there was 2 gallons of antifreeze in the back when I bought it.

The reason your jeep starts to overheat when you stop is because the mechanical fan spins proportionally to the speed of the engine (the fan clutch's job the reduce needless drag on the engine). When youre stopped, or idling, the fan doesnt spin very fast, which allows the engine to heat up. This is when your electric fan kicks on and takes the load off the mech fan usually at about 220-225 degrees. What youre describing makes me think the motor in your fan is done, and all you need to do is get a replacement. If the e-fan doesnt work well even with a direct power hookup, the motor in it is shot. Get a new one, and the problem should be resolved. Keep us posted. Hope everything works out for you.
